Give a color a name people recognize

A hex code like #3b9e7a is precise but means nothing to most people; calling it "a shade of teal" gives an instant sense of what it looks like. Design tools, spreadsheets and CSS itself define around 140 standard color names, from common ones like red and gold to specific ones like cornflowerblue and rebeccapurple. This tool finds the closest one to any color you have.

How it works

Type your color in almost any format your browser understands: a hex code, rgb(), hsl(), or even another name. The tool compares it against every standard CSS color name and finds the one nearest to it in color distance, then shows both swatches side by side so you can judge how close the match really is. If your color is one of the exact standard values, it says so directly.

Where this helps

  • Describing a color in a design handoff or a bug report without pasting a swatch: "close to tomato" is easier to picture than "#ff6347."
  • Naming custom colors in a design system using familiar words as a starting point.
  • Checking what a color you picked from an image or a palette is roughly called.

Limits

The match is the visually closest of 140 fixed names, not a lookup in a larger commercial color-naming database with thousands of entries, so an unusual or muted color may only have a loosely related match. Distance is measured directly in RGB space, a reasonable approximation for this purpose rather than a perceptually exact color-difference formula. Everything is calculated in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

What is this color called?
Type its hex, RGB or HSL value and the tool gives you the closest of the 140 standard CSS color names.
Is the name always exact?
Only when your color matches one of the 140 standard values exactly. Otherwise you get the closest one, with both colors shown so you can judge the difference.
Can I type a color name to check it?
Yes. Typing a name shows that exact color, which is useful to see what a name like rebeccapurple actually looks like.
Where do these color names come from?
The extended list of named colors defined by the CSS Color Module, based on the earlier X11 color names.
Can it name colors more precisely, like Pantone?
No. It only compares against the 140 standard CSS names, not a commercial color system.
Is my color sent anywhere?
No. It is matched in your browser.
