What each person pays, the tip, and the grand total.
The end of a meal is an awkward moment for arithmetic. Someone has to divide the total by the number of people, decide on a tip, add it in and make sure it all comes out right, usually while the waiter waits. This calculator does it in a moment: enter the total of the bill, the number of people and the tip percentage, and see what each person pays.
The tip is calculated as a percentage of the bill and added to it. The grand total is then divided equally between everyone. Each share is shown on its own, together with the tip amount and the total, so you can check the result against the receipt or the card machine. Choose 0% for no tip, or use one of the quick buttons.
Sharing 86.50 plus a tip between four people gives shares with awkward cents. The rounding option raises each share to the next whole amount, so that paying in cash or by transfer is easy. The tool shows the small extra that this produces, which naturally goes towards the tip. Rounding up never leaves the table short.
How much to tip, and whether to tip at all, depends on the country and the type of place. In some countries a service charge is already included in the bill, in others tips are expected and are a large part of the staff's income, and in others they are not customary. The buttons offer common percentages, but use the local habit, and check the receipt for a service charge before adding a tip.
The tool divides equally. If some people ordered much more than others, or one person is paying for another, you need to split by items instead. For unequal shares of an amount, use the amount splitter, which divides by shares or percentages and keeps the total exact.
