Split a long text into parts

Paste a long text, choose the maximum size, and get it divided into parts that end at a paragraph, a sentence or a word instead of in the middle of one. Copy each part separately.

How it works

Paste your text

An article, a transcript, a document or a long conversation.

Set the size and where to cut

Characters or words, and whether to cut at paragraphs, sentences or words.

Copy each part

Copy them one by one, or all together, or download them.

When a text is too long for where it has to go

Many places accept only a limited amount of text at once: a message platform that caps each post, an SMS gateway, a form field with a character limit, a translation box, a speech synthesis tool, or an AI assistant with a limit on the length of a single prompt. Cutting a long text into pieces by hand means counting characters, and cutting at a fixed count leaves you with sentences broken in half and words split in two. This tool divides the text for you at the places where it hurts least.

Where the cuts go

Each part is filled as far as the size limit allows and then cut at the best point found in the last part of that stretch. You choose how careful the cut is:

  • Paragraph: the cut goes at a blank line if there is one near the limit, and otherwise at the end of a sentence, and otherwise between words.
  • Sentence: the cut goes at the end of a sentence if possible, and otherwise between words.
  • Between words: the cut is at a space, so no word is split.
  • Exactly at the limit: a hard cut at the given number, for systems that need equal parts.

Because parts end where the text naturally pauses, they are usually a little shorter than the maximum, and the tool shows the length of the longest part so you can check it fits.

Characters or words, and overlap

The size can be measured in characters, which suits messages and form limits, or in words, which suits translations and writing tasks. When you send parts of a long document to an assistant one after another, a small overlap can help: each part then starts with the last few words of the previous one, so nothing is lost at the boundary. Numbering adds a label such as (2/5) at the start of each part so the order is clear for the reader.

Copy what you need

Each part is shown in its own box with its length and a copy button, so you can paste them one at a time. You can also copy all the parts separated by blank lines or download them in one text file, with a title above each part.

What it does not do

The size counts the characters of the text, which is not the same as the limit of every service, since many count in other units such as tokens or bytes, and some count emoji and links in their own way. Leave some margin when a limit is strict. The tool does not summarise or rewrite anything and it does not understand the meaning of the text, so a cut between two paragraphs may still separate ideas that belong together.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a long text into smaller parts?
Paste the text, set the maximum size in characters or words and choose where to cut. The parts appear below, each with its own copy button.
Will it cut words or sentences in half?
Not unless you choose "Exactly at the limit". By default it cuts at a paragraph, a sentence or a space near the limit.
Can the parts overlap?
Yes. Set an overlap and each part begins with the last few characters or words of the previous one, which helps when parts are read in sequence.
How do I split text for a character limit?
Use the common size buttons, such as 160 or 280 characters, or type your own number. Numbering the parts helps the reader follow the order.
Is the size the same as tokens for an AI model?
No. The tool counts characters or words. Models count in tokens, which are usually shorter than a word, so leave a margin below the limit.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The text is divided in your browser.
