This tool crops to the exact size but does not change the background or check acceptance. The rules of the issuing authority always take priority.

How it works

Choose the document

Pick your country and document. The exact size and head guide are set for you.

Position your photo

Drag the photo so the face sits inside the oval, and zoom until it fits.

Download and print

Get the single photo, or a sheet with several copies to print at any photo store or at home.

Making a passport photo at home

A passport or ID photo has to meet strict rules: an exact size, a plain background, a face looking straight at the camera and a head that fills a set part of the frame. You do not need a booth to get there. With a phone photo taken against a plain wall, this tool crops it to the precise dimensions of your document and gives you guides so the head is the right size and position.

How to take a photo that will be accepted

  • Stand in front of a plain, light wall, with no shadows behind you.
  • Use even, soft light from the front, such as a window, with no shadows across the face and no glare on glasses.
  • Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and both eyes open.
  • Hold the camera at eye level and ask someone else to take it. Selfies distort the face.
  • Take it from a little further away and crop afterwards, rather than up close.

Sizes and head height

Most of Europe, the UK, Australia and Japan use 35 × 45 mm. The United States and India use 51 × 51 mm (2 × 2 inches), Canada 50 × 70 mm and China 33 × 48 mm. Spain uses 26 × 32 mm for the ID card and passport. Each document also says how tall the head must be inside the frame, and the guide oval follows that range. These values are typical requirements, and authorities change them, so confirm them on the official page of the issuing office before you print.

Digital and printed photos

The tool exports the photo at the resolution you choose, 300 dpi by default, which is what photo labs expect. For a printed photo, download the print sheet: it lays out as many copies as fit on a 10 × 15 cm, 13 × 18 cm or A4 sheet, with thin lines to cut along. Some online applications also ask for a maximum file size, and the image size reducer can bring the file under any limit.

What it does not do

This tool crops and sizes. It does not replace the background, retouch the face or check whether an authority will accept the picture. If the wall behind you is not plain, retake the photo rather than trying to fix it.

Frequently asked questions

What size is a passport photo?
It depends on the country. 35 × 45 mm is the most common in Europe, the UK, Australia and Japan. The United States and India use 51 × 51 mm, Canada 50 × 70 mm and China 33 × 48 mm. Pick your document in the tool and the exact size is applied.
Can I use a photo taken with my phone?
Yes, as long as it is sharp, evenly lit, taken straight on against a plain background and not a selfie. Crop it here to the exact size and check the requirements of your issuing authority.
Does this tool change the background?
No. It crops and resizes only. The photo needs a plain, light background when you take it, because most authorities reject retouched or artificial backgrounds.
How do I print it?
Download the print sheet in 10 × 15 cm, 13 × 18 cm or A4. It arranges several copies with cutting lines. Print at a photo store at 100% size, without scaling to fit the page.
Will my photo be accepted?
This tool cannot promise that. It gives you the correct size and guides, but the issuing authority decides. Always read their current requirements.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. It is edited entirely in your browser, and the photo never leaves your device.
How do I make the file smaller for an online form?
Use the image size reducer to bring the finished photo under the maximum size the form allows.
