How it works

Paste your text

A name, a list, a title or a whole document.

Set the options

Choose whether to keep ñ and whether to convert special letters.

Copy the result

Use it for file names, URLs, codes or systems that do not accept accents.

When you need text without accents

Accents and other diacritical marks are essential in writing but a nuisance for many systems. Older databases, some forms, file names shared across operating systems, URLs, email local parts, license plates, airline reservations and barcode labels often accept only the basic Latin alphabet. Sorting and searching are also easier when café and cafe are treated as the same word. This tool converts accented letters to their plain equivalents in one step.

How the conversion works

The text is normalised so that each accented letter is split into its base letter and its mark, and the marks are then removed. This way á, à, ä, â, ã, å all become a, ç becomes c, ü becomes u and so on, for all the Latin-script languages. Capital letters stay capital, and characters that have no accent are not touched at all.

The letter ñ

In Spanish, ñ is a letter of its own and not an accented n, so replacing it changes the word: año (year) is not the same as ano. The option "Keep the letter ñ" is on by default so that only real accents are removed. Turn it off if the destination system does not accept ñ, and be aware that ambiguity can result.

Letters that are not just an accent

Some letters cannot be reduced by removing a mark: ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe, and letters such as ø, đ and ł become o, d and l. The second option applies these common replacements. The stats show how many characters were changed.

What it does not do

It does not transliterate other alphabets: Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic or Chinese text is left as it is. Removing accents can change the meaning of some words, for example papá and papa in Spanish, so use the result for identifiers and search, not for text that people will read. To build a safe file name, combine it with the text cleaner.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove accents from a text?
Paste it and copy the result. Accented letters such as é, ü and ç become e, u and c.
Does it keep the letter ñ?
Yes, by default, because ñ is a letter of its own in Spanish. Untick "Keep the letter ñ" if you need it converted to n.
What happens with ß, æ or ø?
With the second option on, ß becomes ss, æ becomes ae, œ becomes oe and ø, đ and ł become o, d and l.
Can I use it to make URLs or file names?
It is a good first step, since it removes accents. You may still need to replace spaces and symbols; the text cleaner and the file name tools can help.
Does it convert Greek or Cyrillic to Latin letters?
No. Only Latin letters with diacritical marks are converted; other alphabets are left as they are.
Is my text uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion happens in your browser.
