What "dominant color" means here

Rather than just picking the single most common exact pixel value, which can be thrown off by noise or compression artifacts, this tool groups similar colors together into a coarse histogram and reports the group that covers the most of the image. That gives a genuinely representative main color instead of a fluke pixel.

What you get

The result shows a swatch of the color along with its hex code, RGB values, HSL values, and the closest match among the 140 standard CSS color names, so you have every common format on hand without converting anything by hand.

When to use this instead of a full palette

Sometimes you just need one number: the background color to match around a product photo, the accent color a logo reads as at a glance, the overall tone of an image for a quick tag or filter. For pulling out several colors at once instead of just one, use the color palette from image tool, which breaks an image down into a full set of swatches instead of a single answer.

Speed over exactness

The photo is analyzed at a reduced size rather than pixel by pixel at full resolution, which keeps the result close to instant even for a large photo. For finding an overall dominant tone this trade-off doesn't matter — the difference between analyzing every pixel and a well-sampled reduction is not something you'd notice in the result.

Privacy

Your photo is analyzed entirely in your browser. Nothing is ever uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How is the dominant color chosen?
Similar colors are grouped into a coarse histogram, and the group covering the most pixels is reported as the dominant color, which is more reliable than just picking the single most common exact pixel.
What formats does it give me?
A hex code, RGB values, HSL values, and the closest matching standard CSS color name.
Can I get more than one color?
This tool reports just the single most dominant one; for a full breakdown use the color palette from image tool instead.
Does it work with photos that have many similar colors?
Yes, that's exactly the case it handles well, since similar shades get grouped together rather than treated as unrelated colors.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything happens entirely in your browser.
Does image size affect accuracy?
The image is analyzed at a reduced size for speed, which is accurate enough for finding an overall dominant color regardless of the original resolution.
