How to generate an EAN-8 barcode

To generate an EAN-8 barcode, enter the first 7 digits in the value box above and the barcode appears with the eighth digit, the check digit, added automatically. If you type all 8 digits, the tool verifies the last one. Download the barcode as PNG or SVG. It is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

What is EAN-8?

EAN-8 is the short version of EAN-13, made for products too small to carry the full code, such as cigarettes, chewing gum, cosmetics samples and pencils. It holds 8 digits: a 2 or 3 digit GS1 prefix, a short product number and a check digit. EAN-8 numbers are issued individually by GS1, so a company cannot make them up freely as it can with its own EAN-13 range.

How the check digit is calculated

Take the first 7 digits, 9638507. Multiply them alternately by 3 and 1, starting with 3 for the rightmost one: 9×3 + 6×1 + 3×3 + 8×1 + 5×3 + 0×1 + 7×3 = 86. The check digit is what you add to reach the next multiple of 10: 90 − 86 = 4. The full number is 96385074. The generator adds it for you when you type only the first 7 digits, and warns you if a full number has a wrong check digit.

Where it is used

  • Small items where a full EAN-13 would not fit, such as gum, pencils and sample sachets.
  • Internal item numbers with a scannable code and a built-in check.
  • Teaching and testing barcode readers.
  • Short-run labels where the encoded number is short by design.

Generating a barcode is not the same as owning the number

This tool draws a correctly formatted barcode from any number you give it. That is enough for internal use, such as inventory, shelves or test labels. To sell a product in shops and on marketplaces, however, the number must be a GTIN issued by GS1 through a licensed company prefix; otherwise it may collide with another company's product. Buy your numbers from GS1 in your country, then use this tool to draw the codes.

Private by design

The code is drawn by your browser on your own device. What you type, including passwords and contact details, is never sent to a server, and the finished image is yours with no watermark and no expiry.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use EAN-8 instead of EAN-13?
Only when the package is too small for an EAN-13. If the product fits an EAN-13, use that, because it is more widely available.
How is the check digit calculated?
By multiplying the digits alternately by 3 and 1 from the right and adding what is needed to reach a multiple of 10. The generator does it for you.
Can I invent my own EAN-8 number?
For internal use, yes. For retail sale, EAN-8 numbers are assigned by GS1, so you have to request one.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
