How to generate an ITF-14 barcode

To generate an ITF-14 barcode, enter the first 13 digits of the GTIN-14 in the value box above, and the barcode appears with the fourteenth digit, the check digit, added automatically. If you type all 14 digits, the tool verifies the last one. Download the barcode as PNG or SVG. It is generated in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

What is ITF-14?

ITF-14 (Interleaved 2 of 5) is the barcode printed on the outer cartons and cases of retail products. It encodes a 14-digit GTIN-14: an indicator digit that says what kind of pack it is, the 12 digits of the item's GTIN without its check digit, and a new check digit. Digits are interleaved in pairs, so the bars carry the first digit of each pair and the spaces the second. That is why the length must be even.

Anatomy of a GTIN-14

Structure of a GTIN-14
PartDigitsMeaning
Packaging indicator11-8 to identify the pack level; 0 when the item itself is a unit
Item number12The first 12 digits of the EAN-13 or UPC of the product inside
Check digit1Recalculated for the 14-digit number

How the check digit is calculated

Take the first 13 digits, 1234567890123. Multiply them alternately by 3 and 1, starting with 3 for the rightmost one: 1×3 + 2×1 + 3×3 + 4×1 + 5×3 + 6×1 + 7×3 + 8×1 + 9×3 + 0×1 + 1×3 + 2×1 + 3×3 = 109. The check digit is what you add to reach the next multiple of 10: 110 − 109 = 1. The full number is 12345678901231. The generator adds it for you when you type only the first 13 digits, and warns you if a full number has a wrong check digit.

Where it is used

  • Outer cartons and shipping cases, which scanners read in warehouses.
  • Multi-packs, such as a box of 12 units that has its own number.
  • Pallet and case labels in logistics.
  • Corrugated cardboard printing, where the bars can be printed directly on the box.

Generating a barcode is not the same as owning the number

This tool draws a correctly formatted barcode from any number you give it. That is enough for internal use, such as inventory, shelves or test labels. To sell a product in shops and on marketplaces, however, the number must be a GTIN issued by GS1 through a licensed company prefix; otherwise it may collide with another company's product. Buy your numbers from GS1 in your country, then use this tool to draw the codes.

Private by design

The code is drawn by your browser on your own device. What you type, including passwords and contact details, is never sent to a server, and the finished image is yours with no watermark and no expiry.

Frequently asked questions

Why do ITF-14 barcodes have a frame around them?
The thick border, the bearer bars, protects the code from being cut off while printing on rough cardboard. This tool draws the bars; add a frame in your label design if your printer needs one.
How do I make the ITF-14 for a box of 12 products?
Choose an indicator digit from 1 to 8, add the first 12 digits of the product's EAN-13 and let the tool calculate the check digit.
Why must the number of digits be even?
The format encodes digits in pairs, one in the bars and one in the spaces, so it needs an even count. GTIN-14 has 14, which is even.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
