How it works

As they appear in your page's head.

Check the length

In characters and in estimated pixels, with a warning if they are too long or too short.

Titles and descriptions that fit in search results

The title and the meta description of a page are the text that search engines usually show for it in the results. They are what people read before deciding whether to click, so it is worth getting them right. Both have a limit. When they are too long the search engine cuts them with an ellipsis, and the end of a sentence, often the most persuasive part, disappears. When they are too short you waste a chance to say something useful.

Characters and pixels

Guides usually recommend about 50 to 60 characters for titles and about 150 to 160 for descriptions. But search engines do not cut by characters, they cut by width in pixels. A title full of wide letters such as W and M is cut sooner than one with narrow letters such as i and l. This tool shows both: the character count and an estimate of the width in pixels, measured with a common sans-serif font at the sizes used in results. As a guide, titles fit in about 580 pixels and descriptions in about 920.

What to aim for

  • Title: between roughly 30 and 60 characters, with the most important words at the start, and the name of the brand at the end if it fits.
  • Description: between roughly 70 and 155 characters, a real summary of the page that includes what it offers and a reason to click.
  • Different on every page. Repeated titles and descriptions make pages hard to tell apart.

The preview

The tool draws the search result the way it usually looks, with the address, the blue title and the grey description, and cuts the text where it would overflow. That gives you a quick idea before you publish. Keep in mind that the preview is an approximation.

Limits

Search engines are free to rewrite titles and descriptions, and they often show a snippet taken from the page itself if they judge it a better match for a search. Their limits change over time and differ between desktop and mobile. Use these numbers as guidelines, not rules. Your text is measured in your browser and is not uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?
Roughly 30 to 60 characters, and under about 580 pixels. Put the most important words first.
How long should a meta description be?
Roughly 70 to 155 characters, or under about 920 pixels. Write a real summary with a reason to click.
Why does the tool show pixels as well as characters?
Search engines cut by width, not by number of characters. Wide letters take more space, so the same number of characters can fit or not.
Will Google show my meta description?
Often, but not always. It may use text from the page if it thinks that matches the search better.
What happens if my title is too long?
It is usually cut with an ellipsis, so the end is not shown. A different title may also be displayed.
Is my text uploaded?
No. It is measured in your browser.
