The fastest way to turn text into a file

Sometimes the only thing standing between a piece of text and a usable file is an app to open and a File, Save As dialog to click through: a code snippet from a chat that needs to become a .js file, a block of JSON copied from an API response, notes from a meeting that need to be a .txt file on your desktop. This tool skips the detour and turns pasted text straight into a downloaded file.

How to use it

Paste or type your text, give the file a name, and choose its extension from the list, or you can simply keep the default .txt for plain notes. The character and line count updates as you type, and the download button creates the file the moment you press it.

Choosing an extension

The extension does not change how the text is saved, since every option here is a plain text file underneath, but it tells other programs and your operating system how to treat it: a .md file opens in a Markdown editor or renders as formatted text on GitHub, a .json file is recognized by code editors and validators, a .csv file opens directly in a spreadsheet program, and so on.

What it does not do

This does not validate or format the text, so a .json extension does not mean the content is checked as valid JSON; if you need that, use the JSON formatter first and paste its output here, or download directly from that tool. Text is saved as UTF-8, which covers virtually every language and symbol. Nothing you paste is uploaded: the file is generated entirely in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I save pasted text as a file?
Paste the text, give it a name, choose the extension, and press download. The file saves directly to your device.
What file types can I create?
Plain text, Markdown, JSON, CSV, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, XML, YAML and log files, or just leave it as .txt for anything else.
Does it check that my JSON or CSV is valid?
No, it only saves the text as-is with the extension you choose. Use the JSON formatter or CSV tools first if you need validation.
What encoding does the file use?
UTF-8, which handles accented letters, symbols and virtually every language correctly.
Can I create an empty file?
The download button is enabled once you have typed or pasted some text.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. The file is created entirely in your browser.
