The result appears at the top of the list.
The formula is shown under each result.
To calculate the percentage change, subtract the starting value from the final value, divide by the starting value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100 the change is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = +25%. In the calculator above, enter both numbers in the section percentage change from A to B, and the result appears at the top with the direction of the change.
Percentage change = (new value − old value) ÷ |old value| × 100. A positive result is an increase, a negative one is a decrease, and zero means no change. The old value is the base, so it cannot be zero.
A website had 80 visitors on Monday and 100 on Tuesday. Step 1: subtract the starting value from the final one, 100 − 80 = 20. Step 2: divide by the starting value, 20 ÷ 80 = 0.25. Step 3: multiply by 100, which gives +25%. On the way back, from 100 down to 80, the same difference of 20 is measured against 100 and gives −20%, which is why increases and decreases are not symmetrical.
| From | To | Change |
|---|---|---|
| 80 | 100 | +25% |
| 100 | 80 | -20% |
| 50 | 75 | +50% |
| 250 | 200 | -20% |
| 12 | 30 | +150% |
If a rate moves from 4% to 5%, it has risen by 1 percentage point, and by 25% in relative terms (1 ÷ 4). Reports often mix the two, so be clear about which one you mean.
