The formula is shown under each result.

How to increase a number by a percentage

To increase a number by a percentage, multiply it by 1 plus the percentage as a decimal. Increasing 80 by 25% is 80 × 1.25 = 100, an increase of 20. In the calculator above, enter the amount and the percentage in the section increase or decrease an amount and choose increase; the new value and the difference appear at the top of the results.

The formula

  • New value = amount × (1 + percentage ÷ 100)
  • Increase = amount × percentage ÷ 100
  • Percentage increase between two values = (new − old) ÷ old × 100

A worked example, step by step

A shop raises the price of a jacket from 80 by 25%. Step 1: turn 25% into a decimal, 0.25. Step 2: add 1, which gives 1.25. Step 3: multiply, 80 × 1.25 = 100. The new price is 100, which is 20 more than before. You can check it the other way: 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. If the rise is applied twice, do the multiplication twice instead of adding the percentages.

Where you use it

  • Price rises, salary raises and rent increases.
  • Adding a margin, tip or service charge to a price.
  • Growth in sales, visitors or followers between two periods.
  • Scaling recipes and quantities up.

Common mistakes

  • Adding the percentage as a number: 25% of 80 is 20, not 25.
  • Increasing and then decreasing by the same percentage does not return to the start: +25% then −25% leaves 93.75 from 100.
  • Comparing percentages of different bases: a 10% rise of a large amount is more than a 20% rise of a small one.

Private by design

The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The amounts you enter are never sent to a server, so you can use real prices, invoices and quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a 10% increase?
Multiply by 1.1. For example, 200 × 1.1 = 220.
How do I find the percentage increase between two numbers?
Subtract the old value from the new one, divide by the old value and multiply by 100. From 80 to 100: (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%.
Why is a 50% increase followed by a 50% decrease not the same as the start?
Because the second percentage is taken of a bigger number. 100 rises to 150, and 50% of 150 is 75, which leaves 75.
