How it works

Enter the numbers

Fill in the section highlighted at the top.

Read the answer

The result appears at the top of the list.

Check the formula

The formula is shown under each result.

How to find what percent one number is of another

To find what percent one number is of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100. For example, 30 is 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25% of 120. In the calculator above, enter the value and the total in the section X is what percent of Y, and the percentage appears at the top of the results.

The formula

Percentage = part ÷ whole × 100. The whole is the total you compare against, so it cannot be zero. The result can be over 100% when the part is bigger than the whole: 150 is 150% of 100.

A worked example, step by step

You answered 45 questions correctly out of 60 and want your score as a percentage. Step 1: divide the part by the whole, 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. Step 2: multiply by 100, which gives 75%. The same steps work for any share: 12 customers out of 150 is 12 ÷ 150 × 100 = 8%. If the result should be shown with fewer decimals, round only at the very end so the small errors do not add up.

Where you use it

  • Test scores: 45 out of 60 is 75%.
  • Market share, conversion rates and completion rates.
  • Budget lines as a share of the total.
  • Discounts: 7 off a 50 price is 14%.

Tips

  • Always divide by the total, not by the part.
  • To compare two changes, use the percentage change calculator instead.
  • Round only at the end, so that small errors do not add up.
