One US cup of butter is about 227 g, or 8 oz. To convert other amounts, multiply the number of cups by 227: half a cup is 114 g and a quarter of a cup is 57 g. The converter above does it for any amount and also shows the result in ounces.
| Cups | Grams | Ounces |
|---|---|---|
| 1/8 | 28 g | 1 oz |
| 1/4 | 57 g | 2 oz |
| 1/3 | 76 g | 2.7 oz |
| 1/2 | 114 g | 4 oz |
| 2/3 | 151 g | 5.3 oz |
| 3/4 | 170 g | 6 oz |
| 1 | 227 g | 8 oz |
| 2 | 454 g | 16 oz |
Butter weighs about 227 g per cup, or 113 g per US stick, which is half a cup or 8 tablespoons. That matches the markings on the wrapper of American butter, so you can cut what you need directly.
In the UK and much of Europe, butter comes in 250 g or 225 g blocks and is measured in grams already. If a recipe asks for one stick, use about 113 g; for two sticks, a cup, use about 227 g.
| Measure | US | Metric (UK, Canada, Australia, NZ) | Old UK imperial |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cup | 236.6 ml | 250 ml | 284 ml |
| Tablespoon | 14.8 ml | 15 ml (Australia: 20 ml) | 17.7 ml |
| Teaspoon | 4.9 ml | 5 ml | 5.9 ml |
The volume of a US cup, 236.588 ml, is multiplied by the density of butter in g per ml, 0.96. Different brands and ways of filling the cup give slightly different weights, so treat the result as a very good estimate.
