To count characters, type or paste your text in the box above. The number of characters, with and without spaces, appears immediately together with the words, sentences, paragraphs and reading time, and updates on every keystroke. Select part of the text to count only that part. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
A character counter reports two numbers. Characters with spaces counts every keystroke, including spaces, tabs and line breaks. Characters without spaces counts only what is visible. Most limits, such as the ones for social posts and SMS, count spaces, while some forms and translation quotes count without them; check which one your case needs.
| Where | Limit |
|---|---|
| SMS, one message (GSM-7) | 160 |
| SMS, one message with emoji or accents outside GSM | 70 |
| Post on X, standard account | 280 |
| Instagram caption | 2,200 |
| LinkedIn post | 3,000 |
| Google search result title (visible) | about 60 |
| Meta description (visible) | about 155 |
| Google Ads headline | 30 |
| Google Ads description | 90 |
The counter counts what you see as a character, so an emoji, a letter with an accent or a flag is one character, even though computers store some of them as several code units. Some platforms count differently: X counts every URL as 23 characters and gives some emoji and CJK characters more weight, so use the limit selector as a guide and leave a little margin.
