How it works

Type or paste your text

The counts update as you write.

Check the limit

The limit is already selected; change it to compare with another.

Edit until it fits

Trim the text, then copy it into your app.

How to check your character count

To check your character count, type or paste your text in the box above. The counter shows how many characters you have used against the limit already selected for this page, and warns you when you go over. Words, sentences and reading time update too. Everything is counted in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

The 280-character limit

A post on X from a standard account can hold up to 280 characters. The counter here is preset to that limit, so you see at once how many characters you have left and when you go over. Accounts with a paid subscription can write much longer posts, but the first lines are what people see in the timeline, so brevity still pays off.

How X counts differently

How X counts characters
ItemHow it counts on X

Any link23 characters, whatever its length
Most emoji2 each
Chinese, Japanese and Korean characters2 each
Line breaks1 each

Writing posts that fit

  • Lead with the point. The timeline cuts long posts, so put the key idea first.
  • Trim links. They cost 23 characters, so one link and a short sentence leave plenty of room.
  • Use hashtags sparingly. Each one uses characters, and one or two are enough.
  • Leave a margin. The counter counts what you see, so keep a few characters spare for emoji and links.

Thread or one post?

When an idea does not fit, split it into a numbered thread and keep each post self-contained. Draft each post here, check that it is within 280, and number them at the end, for example 1/5.

Private by design

Your text is processed in your browser and never sent to a server, so you can safely convert drafts, contracts, code or anything private.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters can I post on X?
280 for a standard account. Paid subscribers can write longer posts, but the timeline shows only the beginning.
Do links count in full?
No. X counts every link as 23 characters, however long it is, so a long address costs no more than a short one.
Does this counter match X exactly?
It counts visible characters and compares them with 280. X gives extra weight to some emoji and to CJK characters, so leave a small margin for those.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
