How to make a password you can remember

To make a memorable password, open this page: the type is set to pronounceable, so each password is built from consonant and vowel syllables that you can say aloud. Choose the length, keep the digits and capitals if the site requires them, and press for a new one. The passwords are made in your browser from a secure random generator and are not stored or sent anywhere.

How pronounceable passwords work

Instead of random symbols, the generator alternates consonants and vowels to make made-up words such as lajupi or sarafu. They are random, not dictionary words, so they resist guessing, yet your brain can chunk them into syllables and hold them in memory more easily than a string like x7$Qk2.

Length is what counts

Pronounceable passwords carry less randomness per character than fully random ones, so make them longer. A 16 to 20 character pronounceable password with a couple of digits is a good target for accounts you type often. For a master password, add more length or use several unrelated words.

When to use them

  • A master password you must remember, for a password manager or a device.
  • Passwords you have to type on a TV, console or shared computer.
  • Codes you need to read out by phone.
  • Anywhere you cannot paste from a manager.

Better still: a password manager

For most accounts, the safest habit is a different, long, fully random password stored in a password manager, so you only have to remember one master password. Use this generator for the master password and for accounts you cannot paste into.

Private by design

Frequently asked questions

Are pronounceable passwords secure?
Yes, if they are long enough. They are random syllables, not dictionary words. Use at least 16 characters and add digits and capitals.
Can I still add digits and capitals?
Yes. The options let you keep digits and capital letters so the password meets a site's rules.
Is anything stored?
No. Passwords are generated in your browser and are not sent anywhere.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
