How to make a good Wi-Fi password

To make a good Wi-Fi password, open this page: it is set to 20 random characters, using letters and digits and avoiding look-alike characters. Copy it, then set it as the password (the WPA2 or WPA3 key) in your router's settings. Then share it with guests by QR code, so nobody has to type it. The password is made in your browser and is not stored or sent anywhere.

What makes a Wi-Fi password strong

  • Length. At least 16 to 20 characters. Every extra character multiplies the work of guessing it.
  • Randomness. A random string beats a word or a phone number, because attackers try those first.
  • No personal information, such as your address, family names or the network name.
  • WPA2 or WPA3 security, since the strongest password cannot protect an old WEP network.

Why avoid look-alike characters

O and 0, l and 1 and I look almost identical in many fonts. Wi-Fi passwords get typed on phones, consoles and smart TVs, and read out to guests, so a password without ambiguous characters saves mistakes. Letters and digits alone still give enormous strength at 20 characters.

Change it and share it well

  • Set it in your router's admin page, usually reached at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1.
  • Make a guest network with its own password, so visitors never touch your devices.
  • Share it by QR code with the Wi-Fi QR generator, so you never have to spell it out.
  • Change it if you have given it to someone you no longer trust.

Private by design

Everything is calculated in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a Wi-Fi password be?
At least 16 characters; 20 is a comfortable choice. WPA2 and WPA3 accept up to 63 characters.
Should I include symbols?
It is optional. Letters and digits are enough at this length, and symbols can be awkward to type on a TV. Add them in the options if you prefer.
Where do I set the password?
In your router's administration page, in the wireless or Wi-Fi security section. Your provider's manual or app can show you where.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
