How to generate a random PIN

To generate a random PIN, open this page: the type is already set to PIN with 4 digits, and a code is shown. Press the button for a new one, change the length if you need 6 or 8 digits, or raise the count to get a list. The digits come from your browser's cryptographically secure random generator, and the PIN is never stored or transmitted.

How secure is a 4-digit PIN?

PIN strength by length
DigitsPossible PINsTime to try all at 1 guess per second
410,000about 2.8 hours
61,000,000about 11.6 days
8100,000,000about 3.2 years

Why random beats a memorable PIN

People choose the same PINs over and over: 1234, 0000, 1111, birth years and repeated pairs make up a large share of real PINs, so attackers try them first. A truly random PIN removes those patterns. Real-world safety also depends on limits, because a device that locks after a few wrong tries makes even 4 digits hard to crack.

Where random PINs are useful

  • Bank and debit cards, where you can often choose your own PIN.
  • Phone, tablet and SIM card locks.
  • Door locks, safes and alarm panels.
  • Temporary access codes for guests, lockers and shared devices.

Good habits

  • Do not reuse a PIN between your bank card, phone and door lock.
  • Memorise it, and do not write it on the card or store it beside the card.
  • Choose a longer PIN when the system allows it: 6 digits are 100 times harder to guess than 4.
  • Change a PIN you suspect someone has seen.

Private by design

Everything is calculated in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Is the PIN really random?
Yes. Each digit is drawn with crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographic generator, with no bias between digits.
Can a PIN start with zero?
Yes. 0482 is a valid PIN, and the generator can produce it.
Is the PIN saved anywhere?
No. It exists only on your screen until you close the page.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
