How it works

Enter the gross price

The price that already includes VAT.

Check the rate

20% is preset; click another rate or type your own.

Copy the net price and VAT

Both amounts are shown, with the total.

How to remove VAT from a price

To remove VAT from a price, divide the gross price by one plus the VAT rate as a decimal: by 1.2 at 20%, by 1.05 at 5%, by 1.21 at 21%. The result is the net price, and the difference is the VAT. Here, enter the gross amount in the calculator above, already set to remove VAT, and you get both figures. For example, £120 becomes £100 plus £20 of VAT.

Why you cannot just subtract 20%

Taking 20% off a gross price leaves too little tax removed, because the VAT was worked out on the smaller net price. Take £120: 20% of £120 is £24, and £120 − £24 = £96, which is not the real net price of £100. The right method is to divide by 1.2: £120 ÷ 1.2 = £100.

When it helps

  • Invoices and receipts that show only the total.
  • Reclaiming input VAT on a purchase, when you need the VAT figure.
  • Comparing prices shown with and without VAT.
  • Selling to businesses, which usually want the net price.

Private by design

The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The amounts you enter are never sent to a server, so you can use real prices, invoices and quotes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the formula for removing VAT?
Net price = gross price ÷ (1 + rate). At 20% that is gross ÷ 1.2, and the VAT is gross − net.
How much VAT is in £100 including VAT?
At 20%, £16.67 of VAT and a net price of £83.33.
Does it work for other countries?
Yes. Type any rate in the rate field, for example 19% for Germany or 21% for Spain, and the same method applies.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
