How to calculate VAT in the UK

To calculate UK VAT at the standard 20% rate, enter the price without VAT in the calculator above: VAT is 20% of that amount and the total is 1.2 times the price. For example, £100 plus VAT is £120, of which £20 is VAT. To take VAT out of a price that includes it, choose remove VAT and enter the gross price; the tool divides it by 1.2.

Formulas at the 20% rate

  • Price with VAT = price without VAT × 1.2
  • VAT = price without VAT × 0.2
  • Price without VAT = price with VAT ÷ 1.2
  • VAT in a gross price = gross price ÷ 6 (the VAT fraction is 1/6)

When you have to charge VAT

A UK business must register for VAT when its taxable turnover goes over £90,000 in any 12-month period, and may register voluntarily below that. Once registered, you charge VAT on standard-rated and reduced-rated sales and can normally reclaim the VAT you pay on business purchases. Zero-rated sales still count towards turnover and must be reported, while exempt supplies work differently.

Checking your numbers

  • Round VAT to the nearest penny per invoice rather than per line if your invoice shows a single total.
  • Zero-rated is not the same as exempt: zero-rated sales are taxable at 0% and let you reclaim input VAT.
  • Rates and thresholds change; confirm the current ones on GOV.UK before filing.

Private by design

The calculation runs in your browser as you type. The amounts you enter are never sent to a server, so you can use real prices, invoices and quotes.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add 20% VAT to a price?
Multiply by 1.2. For example, £50 × 1.2 = £60, and the VAT is £10.
How do I work out the VAT in a price that includes it?
Divide the price by 6 to get the VAT, or by 1.2 to get the price without VAT. For £120, VAT is £20 and the net price is £100.
What is the UK VAT registration threshold?
£90,000 of taxable turnover in a 12-month period at the time of writing. Check GOV.UK for the current figure.
