How it works

How to calculate sales tax

To calculate sales tax, multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal and add the result to the price. At 8%, a $100 item has $8 of tax and costs $108 in total. In the calculator above, enter the price and your combined rate; the tax and the total appear at once. To work backwards from a total, choose remove tax and the tool divides the total by 1 plus the rate.

How US sales tax works

In the United States, sales tax is added at the register on top of the marked price, unlike VAT in Europe, where the price on the tag already includes tax. Rates are set by states and often by counties and cities as well, so the total rate you pay is the sum of several parts. Five states have no state sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, although some local governments in Alaska charge their own.
