The time between two clock times, or the total of a list.
Enter a start and end time with an optional break to get the time worked, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours. Or add up a list of durations such as 1:30 and 2h 15m.

The time between two clock times, or the total of a list.
With an optional unpaid break, or one duration per line.
In hours and minutes, decimal hours and minutes, and pay if you add a rate.
Hours are awkward to calculate because they are not decimal: 8:30 is not 8.30. Working out how long a shift lasted, how many hours go into a timesheet, how long a journey or a recording took, or how much time a set of tasks adds up to is a constant chore. This calculator handles the two common cases: the time between a start and an end, and the total of a list of durations.
Enter when you started and when you finished, and, if relevant, the minutes of unpaid break. The result is the time worked in hours and minutes. If the end is earlier than the start, the tool assumes the period crosses midnight, as for a night shift from 22:00 to 06:00, and says so. If you enter an hourly rate, you get the pay for that time.
Payroll and billing systems usually want hours as decimals: 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours, and 7 hours 40 minutes is 7.667. Each result includes the decimal figure, rounded to three places, which you can copy directly into a timesheet or invoice. The number of minutes is shown too, for systems that count in minutes.
Paste or type one duration per line and the tool gives the total. It reads several ways of writing time: the clock form 1:30, the form with units 2h 15m, minutes on their own such as 45m and a plain number, taken as decimal hours. Use it to add the lengths of videos or songs, the time spent on tasks in a week or the parts of a journey. Lines that cannot be read are listed and ignored so that they do not spoil the total.
It works with clock times within a day and does not deal with dates, time zones or daylight saving changes: a night shift across the clock change may really be an hour longer or shorter. Local labour rules on breaks, overtime and rounding are not applied. For a period that spans several days, use the date difference calculator.
