Years, months and days, plus totals and the next birthday.
Age is more than a number of years. For a form you may need the exact age on a given date, for a child the age in months, for a curiosity how many days you have lived, and for a party how long until the next birthday. This calculator works out all of these from a date of birth, and you can measure the age on any date, not just today, which is useful to know how old someone will be at a future event or was at a past one.
Age in years, months and days is a calendar difference. From the date of birth, whole years are counted up to the latest birthday, then whole months, then the remaining days. If the birthday has not yet happened this year, the age in years is one less. Months are counted with their real lengths, so the result does not depend on an average month.
The months, weeks, days and hours lived are shown as running totals, useful for baby milestones ("she is 30 weeks old"), records and celebrations ("10,000 days old" happens at around 27 years and 5 months). The weekday of birth is shown too, together with the next birthday: its date, how many days are left and the age that will be reached.
People born on 29 February have a real birthday only in leap years. In other years, the tool treats 28 February as the birthday, which is the more common convention, although in some places the law uses 1 March. Check the local rule if it matters for legal purposes.
Change the second date to know how old someone was or will be on that day: the age required to enter a competition on a fixed date, at the end of a school year, on the day of an appointment or at a historic event. The calculation treats both as calendar dates, without time of day or time zone.
It is a calculation, not an identity check, and it does not adapt to traditional age-counting systems used in some cultures, in which a person is one year old at birth. To find the time between any two dates, not necessarily a birth date, use the date difference calculator.
