How to convert text to camelCase

To convert text to camelCase, paste it in the box above and the result appears instantly in the output box, ready to copy. The style is already selected on this page. Every line is converted on its own, accents and other alphabets are respected, and nothing is uploaded because it all runs in your browser.

What it does

camelCase joins words with no separator, writes the first word in lowercase and starts every following word with a capital, so that the capitals look like the humps of a camel. It is the default naming style for variables and functions in JavaScript, Java, Swift and many other languages, and for keys in most JSON APIs.

Where it is used

  • Variable and function names in JavaScript, TypeScript, Java, Kotlin and Swift.
  • JSON keys when an API expects camelCase but your data uses snake_case.
  • Property names derived from CSS such as background-color, which JavaScript exposes as backgroundColor.
  • Turning column headers from a spreadsheet into code identifiers.

Tips and things to check

  • camelCase starts in lowercase; PascalCase, which starts in uppercase, is used for class and component names.
  • Spaces, hyphens, underscores and punctuation are removed, and existing capitals inside a word mark where it is split.
  • Names should not start with a digit in most languages, so add a prefix if the first word is a number.

Private by design

Your text is processed in your browser and never sent to a server, so you can safely convert drafts, contracts, code or anything private.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between camelCase and PascalCase?
camelCase starts with a lowercase letter, like userName, and PascalCase starts with an uppercase letter, like UserName. Classes and types usually use PascalCase, variables and functions camelCase.
How are acronyms handled?
The tool treats a run of capitals such as HTML as one word and normalises the case, giving parseHtml. Adjust by hand if your style guide wants parseHTML.
Does it convert several lines?
Yes. Each line becomes its own camelCase name, so you can paste a whole list of column names.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
