How to convert text to Sentence case

To convert text to Sentence case, paste it in the box above and the result appears instantly in the output box, ready to copy. The style is already selected on this page. Every line is converted on its own, accents and other alphabets are respected, and nothing is uploaded because it all runs in your browser.

What it does

Sentence case is how ordinary prose is written: the first letter of each sentence is capitalised and everything else is lowercase. The converter lowercases the whole text first and then capitalises the first letter after every full stop, question mark, exclamation mark and line break, so it can rescue a paragraph typed with caps lock on.

Where it is used

  • Repairing text typed in ALL CAPS or pasted from a source that used capitals only.
  • Cleaning transcripts and captions that come out in lowercase or without capitals.
  • Normalising headlines to the sentence-style used by many news sites and apps.
  • Tidying spreadsheet notes and product descriptions written in inconsistent case.

Tips and things to check

  • Proper nouns such as London or Anna and the pronoun I will be lowercased, so scan the result and fix those by hand.
  • Abbreviations that contain a full stop, such as e.g. or Dr., can trigger a capital after them; check these cases.
  • For headings that should have a capital on every main word, use the title case converter.

Private by design

Your text is processed in your browser and never sent to a server, so you can safely convert drafts, contracts, code or anything private.

Frequently asked questions

Does it fix text written entirely in capitals?
Yes. It lowercases everything first and then capitalises the beginning of each sentence and each new line.
What counts as the start of a sentence?
The start of the text, the first letter after a full stop, question mark or exclamation mark followed by a space, and the start of any new line.
Will it keep proper nouns capitalised?
No, because the tool cannot tell names from ordinary words. Re-capitalise names, places and brands by hand after converting.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
