100% private — your images are compressed on your device and are never uploaded to any server.

Works with images up to about 60 MB each. GIFs are converted using their first frame. On an older phone, very large images may be slow.

How to compress a JPG

To compress a JPG, drop your photos on the box above. The tool re-encodes them as JPG at the quality set on the slider, 75 by default, which usually cuts the size by half or more without a visible difference. Compare the original with the result, adjust the slider or set a maximum width, and download. It all runs in your browser, so your photos are never uploaded.

How JPG compression works

JPG is a lossy format: to make the file smaller, it discards detail the eye barely notices. The quality setting controls how much. Around 75 to 85 the result looks the same as the original for most photos, while 50 gives a much smaller file with some softness in fine detail.

Quality against size

JPG quality settings
QualityTypical result
90-95Almost identical, modest savings
75-85Looks the same, files about half the size
50-60Small files, slight loss on close inspection
under 40Visible blocks and blur

Get even smaller files

  • Set a maximum width: a photo of 4000 pixels shown at 1200 pixels wastes most of its data.
  • Compress once from the original. Recompressing an already compressed JPG loses quality each time.
  • Choose WebP as the output format for even smaller files when the destination accepts it.

Where compressed JPGs help

Web pages that load faster, emails under the attachment limit, upload forms with a size cap and backups that take less space. For a specific target such as 100 KB, use the image size reducer.

Private by design

Everything is calculated in your browser as you type; nothing is sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best JPG quality?
For photos on the web, 75 to 85 is the usual sweet spot: the file is much smaller and the difference is hard to see.
Does compressing reduce the dimensions?
Only if you set a maximum width. Otherwise the pixel size stays the same and only the data is reduced.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. The compression happens in your browser.
Is this converter free?
Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit, and it runs in your browser, so nothing you type is sent to a server.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It works in any modern mobile browser, and the result updates as you type.
