How to convert JPG to WebP

To convert JPG to WebP, drop your JPG files on the box above, choose the output quality and download the result. The conversion happens inside your browser, so the files never leave your device, and it is free with no sign-up.

What JPG and WebP are

JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard photo format. It compresses with loss: fine detail is discarded to keep files small, which is invisible at moderate settings. It has no transparency and no animation, and every camera, phone, browser, printer service and upload form accepts it.

WebP is Google's modern image format. It can be lossy or lossless, supports transparency and animation, and usually makes files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Current browsers read it; some older apps, print services and email programs still do not.

Why convert JPG to WebP

Turning JPG into WebP is one of the simplest ways to speed up a website. The same photo usually takes a quarter to a third less space as WebP at a similar look, so pages load faster and use less mobile data, which also helps in search results that reward fast pages.

What changes when you convert JPG to WebP

  • The file shrinks. At equal visual quality, WebP is typically 25 to 35 percent lighter than JPG.
  • Another lossy step is added. Both formats discard detail, so use a high quality setting to avoid visible loss when converting from an existing JPG.
  • Some older software cannot open WebP. Browsers all support it, but older editors, Office versions and print services may not.

Tips for the best result

  • Start from the original camera or export file when you have it; converting an already compressed JPG adds a second round of loss.
  • Quality 80 to 85 is a good balance of weight and detail for web photos.
  • Keep the JPG too if the picture will also be printed or sent to people who may use older programs.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your JPG files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

How much smaller is WebP than JPG?
Usually about a quarter to a third at similar visual quality, although it depends on the picture. Photos with lots of fine texture save less than smooth images such as skies or product shots on plain backgrounds.
Can I use WebP everywhere I use JPG?
On the web, yes: every current browser supports it. For email attachments, printing, older office programs or some upload forms, JPG is still the safer choice, so keep both if you are unsure.
Is this JPG to WebP converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several JPG files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
