What PNG and JPG are

PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos and screenshots stay razor sharp, and it supports full transparency. The price is size, since a photo saved as PNG is often three to ten times bigger than the same photo as JPG.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard photo format. It compresses with loss: fine detail is discarded to keep files small, which is invisible at moderate settings. It has no transparency and no animation, and every camera, phone, browser, printer service and upload form accepts it.

Why convert PNG to JPG

People convert PNG to JPG almost always for one reason: weight. Screenshots, exports from design tools and scans saved as PNG are often several megabytes, which is too much for an email, a job portal or a website. As JPG the same picture usually drops to a fraction of that size, and JPG is accepted everywhere PNG sometimes is not, for example some print orders and older upload forms.

What changes when you convert PNG to JPG

  • Size drops sharply. A photographic PNG commonly becomes three to ten times smaller as JPG at quality 90.
  • Transparency disappears. JPG cannot be see-through, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose (white by default).
  • Fine detail is simplified. Photos look the same to the eye, but sharp text, thin lines and flat-color graphics can show faint blur around the edges at low quality.

Tips for the best result

  • Keep the quality between 85 and 92 for photos; go down to 70 only when weight matters more than detail.
  • For screenshots with small text, stay at 90 or above, or keep the PNG: JPG is not designed for crisp text.
  • If your PNG has a transparent background, set the background color to match the page or document where it will be used before converting.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your PNG files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

Will converting PNG to JPG lower the quality?
Slightly, and how much depends on the quality setting. At 85 to 92 most photos look identical to the eye. JPG is lossy, so it is best to convert from your original PNG once rather than converting the same file again and again.
What happens to the transparent background of my PNG?
JPG cannot store transparency, so the see-through areas are painted with the background color you pick before converting. White is the default; choose black or any color that suits where the picture will appear.
Is this PNG to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several PNG files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
