What GIF and JPG are

GIF stores at most 256 colors per frame and supports simple animation and one-bit transparency. It suits tiny icons and short loops, but it handles photos badly.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard photo format. It compresses with loss: fine detail is discarded to keep files small, which is invisible at moderate settings. It has no transparency and no animation, and every camera, phone, browser, printer service and upload form accepts it.

Why convert GIF to JPG

GIF to JPG is what you need when a static picture was saved as GIF: an old logo, a scanned image, a screenshot or a photo from a legacy system. As JPG it opens everywhere, is smaller for photographic content and can go through upload forms that reject GIF.

What changes when you convert GIF to JPG

  • Animation is not kept. An animated GIF becomes a single still image made from its first frame.
  • Colors get richer. GIF is limited to 256 colors, while JPG can show millions, so photographic pictures usually look smoother afterwards.
  • Transparency is replaced. GIF's see-through pixels are filled with the background color you choose.

Tips for the best result

  • If you need every frame of an animation, convert the frames separately or keep the GIF; JPG holds a single image.
  • Choose a background color that matches the page where the picture will be placed if the GIF has a transparent area.
  • For small, flat graphics with few colors, PNG may stay sharper than JPG.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your GIF files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an animated GIF when I convert it to JPG?
JPG cannot store animation, so you get one still image from the first frame. To keep the movement, leave the file as GIF or convert it to a video or animated WebP with a dedicated tool.
Will the picture look better as JPG than as GIF?
For photographs, usually yes, because JPG can show millions of colors instead of 256. The difference is much smaller for simple drawings, where GIF or PNG can look cleaner.
Is this GIF to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several GIF files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
