How to convert PNG to WebP

To convert PNG to WebP, drop your PNG files on the box above, choose the output quality and download the result. The conversion happens inside your browser, so the files never leave your device, and it is free with no sign-up.

What PNG and WebP are

PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos and screenshots stay razor sharp, and it supports full transparency. The price is size, since a photo saved as PNG is often three to ten times bigger than the same photo as JPG.

WebP is Google's modern image format. It can be lossy or lossless, supports transparency and animation, and usually makes files roughly a quarter to a third smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality. Current browsers read it; some older apps, print services and email programs still do not.

Why convert PNG to WebP

Site owners convert PNG to WebP to make pages load faster. Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and WebP typically cuts a PNG's weight by about a quarter while keeping transparency, which helps loading speed, mobile data use and search performance.

What changes when you convert PNG to WebP

  • The file gets lighter. Lossless WebP is commonly around a quarter smaller than the same PNG, and lossy WebP can be much smaller still.
  • Transparency is kept. Unlike JPG, WebP stores see-through areas, so logos and cut-outs survive the conversion.
  • Compatibility narrows a little. All current browsers show WebP, but some older programs and print or email tools do not read it.

Tips for the best result

  • Use quality 80 to 90 for photos and screenshots; that range is where WebP saves the most with no visible change.
  • Keep the PNG as your master copy and publish the WebP, so you can re-export later without stacking compression.
  • For files that must open in every program, convert to JPG or keep the PNG instead.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your PNG files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

Is WebP better than PNG for websites?
For most web images, yes: it is lighter at similar quality, supports transparency and is supported by all current browsers. PNG remains the safer choice when the file has to open in older software or be edited without any loss.
Will the transparent parts of my PNG stay transparent?
Yes. WebP supports transparency, including soft semi-transparent edges, so logos, icons and cut-out images convert without a background appearing.
Is this PNG to WebP converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several PNG files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
