What JPG and PNG are

JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard photo format. It compresses with loss: fine detail is discarded to keep files small, which is invisible at moderate settings. It has no transparency and no animation, and every camera, phone, browser, printer service and upload form accepts it.

PNG is a lossless format: every pixel is stored exactly, so text, logos and screenshots stay razor sharp, and it supports full transparency. The price is size, since a photo saved as PNG is often three to ten times bigger than the same photo as JPG.

Why convert JPG to PNG

Converting JPG to PNG is useful when you need a lossless working file or a format that a specific tool demands. Editors and design apps prefer PNG because saving it again never degrades the picture, some upload forms and game or app assets ask for PNG explicitly, and PNG is the format you need if you plan to add transparency afterwards.

What changes when you convert JPG to PNG

  • The file gets bigger. PNG stores every pixel exactly, so a photo that was 500 KB as JPG can become 2 to 6 MB as PNG.
  • Quality is not restored. The detail JPG already discarded cannot come back; the PNG is an exact copy of the JPG as it is now.
  • No more generation loss. From this point you can edit and re-save the PNG as often as you like without it degrading further.

Tips for the best result

  • Convert only when you need PNG: for sharing or for the web, the JPG is smaller and looks the same.
  • If the picture is a photo, expect a large file; if it is a logo or a flat graphic, PNG will be small and clean.
  • Do not expect the conversion to add a transparent background: the image stays fully opaque until you remove its background in an editor.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your JPG files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting JPG to PNG improve the quality?
No. PNG is lossless, but the quality of a JPG is already fixed: converting keeps it exactly as it is, without recovering detail or removing compression artifacts. What you gain is that later edits and saves will not degrade it further.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the JPG?
JPG throws away fine detail to be small, while PNG stores every pixel with no loss. Photographs contain millions of slightly different colors, which PNG cannot compress well, so the file grows a lot.
Is this JPG to PNG converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several JPG files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
