What BMP and JPG are

BMP is an old uncompressed Windows format. It keeps every pixel untouched but is enormous: a 12-megapixel photo takes about 36 MB.

JPG (also written JPEG) is the standard photo format. It compresses with loss: fine detail is discarded to keep files small, which is invisible at moderate settings. It has no transparency and no animation, and every camera, phone, browser, printer service and upload form accepts it.

Why convert BMP to JPG

BMP files are huge for what they hold, which makes them awkward to send, store or upload. Converting BMP to JPG is the fastest way to shrink them: a picture of several megabytes usually drops below a few hundred kilobytes, and JPG works with every email program, website and phone.

What changes when you convert BMP to JPG

  • The size collapses. BMP stores raw pixels with no compression, so a 30 MB BMP photo often becomes well under 1 MB as JPG.
  • Some detail is simplified. JPG is lossy; at quality 90 it is very hard to see the difference in photographs.
  • Nothing important is lost for photos. BMP has no transparency in common use and no animation, so there is little to give up.

Tips for the best result

  • Quality 90 to 95 keeps photographs practically identical to the BMP.
  • For screenshots, diagrams or scanned text, PNG stays sharper than JPG and is still far smaller than BMP.
  • Keep the BMP only if a program specifically requires it for pixel-exact processing.

Private by design

The conversion runs entirely in your browser using your device's own image engine. Your BMP files are never uploaded to a server, so personal photos, documents and unpublished designs stay with you, and there is no queue and no size limit imposed by an upload.

Frequently asked questions

Why are BMP files so large?
BMP stores the color of every pixel without any compression. A 12-megapixel image at 24 bits per pixel takes about 36 MB, while the same picture as JPG is commonly under 4 MB.
Is JPG or PNG better for a BMP?
For photographs, JPG gives the smallest file. For screenshots, drawings or text, PNG keeps edges perfectly sharp and is still much smaller than BMP.
Is this BMP to JPG converter free?
Yes, completely. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on the number of files. The tool runs in your browser, so it costs us nothing to let you use it as much as you like.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion is done on your own device with your browser's image engine. Nothing is sent to a server, which also makes it fast and safe for private pictures.
Can I convert several BMP files at once?
Yes. Add as many as you like; each one is converted separately and you can download them individually or all together in a ZIP file.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes. It runs in any modern mobile browser on iPhone and Android. Very large images can be slow on older phones because your device does the work.
